George Zimny and Kerri Roberts discuss on the podcast Don't Waste the Chaos: Navigating the Chaos of Hiring: Lessons from My Recent Podcast with Kerri Roberts

Hiring enough of the right people is one of the most critical—and challenging—aspects of growing a successful business. I recently had the opportunity to sit down with Kerri Roberts on the Don’t Waste the Chaos podcast to discuss the complexities of recruitment, the evolution of hiring strategies, and how small businesses can compete for top talent. Our conversation covered a lot of ground, and I wanted to share some key takeaways with you in this week’s newsletter.

The Evolution of Hiring: What’s Changed? The hiring landscape has shifted dramatically in the last decade. Gone are the days when a simple job posting on a major board could yield a flood of qualified applicants. Today, companies are dealing with:

• Increased Competition: Top talent has more options than ever, making it harder for businesses to stand out.

• Job Seeker Expectations: Candidates now prioritize company culture, career growth, and work-life balance over just salary.

• Recruitment Technology: AI-driven sourcing, automated screening tools, and targeted job ads have changed the game, making hiring more data-driven than ever.

The Biggest Hiring Mistakes Companies Make: In the podcast, we discussed some of the most common mistakes businesses make when hiring. Here are a few that stood out:

1. Hiring Out of Desperation – Too many companies wait until they’re in crisis mode to recruit, leading to rushed decisions and poor hires. The best companies recruit proactively rather than reactively.

2. Failing to Define the Role Properly – Many hiring managers aren’t clear on what they actually need in a candidate, leading to vague job descriptions and mismatched hires.

3. Ignoring Cultural Fit – A candidate might have the right experience, but if they don’t align with your company’s values and work style, it’s a recipe for turnover.

4. Overvaluing Past Experience – Experience is important, but current skills, adaptability, and problem-solving ability often matter more in the long run.

Over-Assessing and Under-Connecting

To build stronger hiring outcomes, companies should:

✔ Prioritize conversations over checklists – A candidate’s potential, attitude, and adaptability often matter more than just their past job titles or years of experience.

✔ Engage early and authentically – Instead of just pushing candidates through automated screens, create touchpoints that allow for real dialogue and connection.

✔ Balance structure with flexibility – While assessments and structured interviews are important, leaving room for organic conversation can reveal far more about a candidate’s fit.

✔ Make hiring a two-way street – Candidates aren’t just being evaluated—they’re evaluating you. A process that feels robotic or impersonal can turn great talent away.

The best hiring decisions come from a mix of smart assessment and meaningful human connection—not just one or the other.

How Small Businesses Can Compete for Talent: One of the biggest challenges for small and mid-sized businesses is competing with larger companies that can offer higher salaries and more extensive benefits. But as I shared in our conversation, competing isn’t always about money. Here’s what smaller businesses can do to attract top talent:

• Emphasize Growth & Impact – Many candidates today want meaningful work where they can make an impact. Highlight the role’s purpose and how it contributes to the company’s success.

• Create a Strong Employer Brand – Showcase your culture, team, and values on social media and job postings. A compelling company story can be just as attractive as a high salary.

• Offer Flexibility – Whether it’s hybrid work options, autonomy in the role, or unique perks, small businesses can offer things that larger companies often can’t.

• Speed Up Hiring Decisions – Many large corporations have slow and bureaucratic hiring processes. A fast and efficient interview process can help small businesses secure top talent before competitors even make an offer.

Final Thoughts: At my current business we have had the pleasure to work with about 70 unique clients, serving offices in over 100 US markets across financial services, real estate, senior care, and other industries to improve hiring outcomes, while reducing costs. The conversation on Don’t Waste the Chaos was a great reminder of why recruitment isn’t just about filling positions—it’s about building the foundation for long-term business success.
